On Thursday, April 5, 2018, Attorney Lori Guzick received the 2018 Pennsylvania Safety Advocacy Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for Guz’s Charitable Project.
This award, new for 2018, is presented to survivor advocates who have made notable contributions to advancing safer roadways in Pennsylvania. The work of these individuals exemplifies extraordinary commitment to traffic safety and displays the noblest of spirits as a loss or experience is channeled into visible contributions to and impact upon the Traffic Safety Advocate movement.
The mission of Guz’s Charitable Project is to raise awareness of the repercussions of distracted driving, specifically texting and driving, in memory of David Guzick. Dave was killed on March 12, 2013, by an irresponsible, distracted driver. Each year Guz’s Charitable Project chooses a nonprofit organization to benefit from their efforts, as they continue their mission to provide education concerning the dangers of distracted driving, specifically texting and driving.
Project recipients have included:
- 2017 – Pottsville Free Public Library
- 2016 – St. Patrick’s Pottsville Area Soup Kitchen
- 2015 – Diakon’s Meals on Wheels
- 2014 – Local Animal Shelters
- 2013 – Schuylkill Women in Crisis
Attorney Guzick commented, “Guz’s Charitable Project was born of grief and loss and has become a symbol of strength and community. Thank you for this award. It is such a great honor. I know Dave is looking down on us and smiling!”
